Zeynep Kayan
Zeynep is an artist based in Ankara, Turkey. She got her MA from Fine Arts Department of MaHKU in Utrecht, Netherlands. She was the co-founder of an independent art space in Ankara called “torun”. Her practice includes photography, video, and sound pieces. She explores ideas of “self” and the “human condition”. By using her own archive, Zeynep (re)creates images by deconstructing old ones, to reflect both change and repetitiveness simultaneously.
🄼 We know that you were artist-in-residence at Cité Internationale des Arts for 3 months and flew back to Turkey when it all started. Can you tell us about your experience with the pandemic in Turkey and France? How are the artist communities responding?
🅉 Things changed so fast in Paris; one day we were having open studios at Cité internationale des arts, the next day everything was cancelled and many people started leaving. There is still artists (mostly whom with visas that enable them to stay) who chose to be in confinement at their Cité studio and I am still following their "online" open studios and also their experiences with the police in the streets. Flying back to Turkey, I had to stay in a lockdown dormitory room in Istanbul, without being able to reach where I am based in Turkey (Ankara). everything was just bizarre. I still don't know the right word to describe the whole experience. Luckily I had all my stuff with me; my microphone and my notes was very helpful but mostly I was in a survival mood, not really interacting with a community. Only now I can also see that everyday there is more "live", "zoom" events for artists, either independently or as a community in Turkey as well.
🄼 Do you have any routines that are helping you during this period of isolation and social distancing?
🅉 I started reading while I'm walking on my first day and now I can't really stop it. Sometimes I even use my microphone to read it out loud.
I dance a lot.
And I try to catch "revoir" and le cnd's posts almost everyday, perhaps as a reminiscent of my days in Paris.
🄼 Do you have access to your art studio during the shelter-in-place(quarantine)? If not, how has this affected you/your practice?
🅉 I don't have access to my studio right now, as I got out of the dormitory lockdown in İstanbul by signing a paper that says I will stay home another 14 days. A dear friend of mine brought all my musical stuff from my atelier to my place and some clothes that I thought I could use to make backgrounds. Slowly my place turns into a kind of an atelier which is nice and challenging. I find myself doing more and more sound and video works, but I can not clearly see for the moment if it is about this time period or not.
🄼 We know that you have a deep passion for music. Is there a particular song or album that you’re finding yourself listening over and over again?
🅉 On the first 14 days I listened to Lorelei from Tom Tom Club endlessly. And now I'm quite obsessed with Cluster's Zuckerzeit.
🄼 What is the best/worst thing about staying home?
🅉 Best is that you have a home to stay home.
🄼 Do you have any current book/movie/ tv series recommendations for artists (or anyone)?
🅉 I have this amazing recommendation from a dear friend: 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥
🄼 Do you have anything coming up that you’d like to share or promote?
🅉 Together with özgür atlagan, we are a part of a screening program "afterhope" nominated by Naz Cuguoğlu, with our work titled mum # 4 (suyun gözünü bulana dek) / candle # 4 (until finding the source of the water) due to september 2020 at Asian Art Museum.
